How Long are Insecticide Barriers Effective?

Many consumers of termiticides and other insecticide products justifiably want to know how long they can expect these products to do their job and continue working. As any termite control professional will tell you, these pests can get through the smallest openings in an insecticide barrier. Therefore, the initial goal of the technician is simply to establish an effective barrier in the first place. Trying to get to all the different entry points and the areas from which a colony might gain access to a home is critical once this is accomplished, it usually does not take long for termite control technicians to establish an effective barrier.

Chlordane No Longer On Market

In the days before chlordane was taken off the market, it was the most widely used of all termiticides because it was astonishingly effective, and its effectiveness was extremely long lasting. Chlordane and other similar products could provide a home with up to 20 years of protection or more if application as done correctly. Chlordane was taken off the market primarily for misuse. Today, some homeowners still think 20 years is the expected timeline for protection. But this is not the case any longer.

Today's Termiticides Last Five Years

Today's products used to establish protective barriers around the perimeter of the home can reasonably be expected to continue protecting your home for up to five years. An important note to keep in mind is the fact that this time estimate is generalized and may not reflect every situation. The effectiveness of the barrier may be affected by the application, or a host of other factors. Talk to your termite control company and ask them about how long their products last, and get information about warranties for the termite control solutions they provide.
