Do Termites Spread House to House in a Neighborhood?
If you have a neighbor next door or down the street from you who has recently had to battle a termite infestation, it is natural as a homeowner to be worried about your own home. Smart homeowners will want to know what to do in this scenario to protect their house from being the next one visited by these destructive pests. Examining their behavior and finding out about their tendencies can give you a better sense of understanding not only of your risk, but of what you should be doing to reduce that risk.
When you find out that your next door neighbor has termites, the first reaction you'll probably have is that your home is going to be next. But this knee jerk reaction is not necessarily based on fact. Termites move through the soil without following any discernable directional pattern as they search for food. Therefore, if your neighbor has had to call in a termite control company at his house, this is not set in stone evidence that your house will be eaten up next. Your home does not have to be treated for termites just because the house next door has been infested.
However, if this situation happens in your neighborhood, get your home inspected. Do it right off the bat even if you do not see signs of infestation. Just get it checked out so that you have no worries. In the meantime, don't give termites an open invitation to the inside of your home. If you have firewood stacked near the house, move it away from the building. The more you do to prevent them from gaining an access point to your home, the less likely you are to have your own problem with termite control.
